All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) publish report on the impact of AI on the music industry
An influential cross-party group of MPs and Peers published a new report today that calls for fresh legislation to support the UK music industry and music fans by regulating artificial intelligence.
We welcome the APPG inquiry into AI, an important topic for music makers and creators. We particularly welcome findings, regarding the need to seek creator consent for use of works. The report should be read in conjunction with the CMM five AI principles.
Along with the MMF, Ivors, MU and MPG, we have responded to the report as the Council Of Music Makers:
“We are grateful to the APPG for this report, which provides a helpful framework for government. AI offers opportunities for the music industry, but only if music-makers’ rights are protected. The government should ensure that both tech companies and rights-holders get consent from music-makers before using their work in AI and then fairly compensate them”.
The report from the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Music comes amid mounting concerns about the impact of AI-generated music on the music industry.
Those fears are reflected in an exclusive UK Music poll of more than 2,000 people who were asked for their views on issues ranging from the use of creators’ work by AI firms to deepfake images of artists like Dua Lipa and Taylor Swift.
